A 26-year-old man has been charged over the assault of an intellectually disabled man in Sydney's south.

The 23-year-old was attacked last Wednesday after being followed off the train at Bexley North.

Police say his attacker forced him into a nearby laneway and pushed him to the ground, before going through his wallet.

He was then dragged a short distance before he was able to break free and raise the alarm at a nearby pharmacy.

A 26-year-old man was arrested at a property in Concord on Tuesday afternoon and has been charged with assault with intent to rob, detain for advantage and common assault.

He's been refused bail and will front Burwood Local Court on Wednesday.
