Car chase teen driver given bail

A teenager who led police on an 80km chase, from the NSW Central Coast to Sydney, that ended when his car caught fire has been sentenced to at least one year in jail.

But Daniel Gibson, 18, was granted conditional bail by Gosford Local Court to appeal the two-year maximum sentence handed down by Magistrate Alan Railton.

The court also fined Gibson $400 and banned him from driving until April 8.

Police began pursuing Gibson, 18, after he allegedly didn't stop at an RBT at Long Jetty, on the Central Coast, on December 30.

He is accused of driving at speeds of up to 170km/h along the M1 before running over road spikes police had set up at Berowra.

The chase continued but was terminated at Pymble.

"The vehicle stopped on the Pacific Highway at Killara when it caught fire," police said.

Gibson, another man, and 21-year-old Winona Borg-Williams ran from the car but were quickly arrested.

Four offences including reckless driving and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h were laid against Gibson.

As part of his bail, Gibson was ordered to post a $1,000 surety.

He is due to appear at Gosford Local Court on February 23.
