Bus driver jailed over child sex offences

A Sydney school bus driver has been jailed for at least two years and eight months after he parked his minivan and forced himself upon a disabled underage passenger.

Ahmed Ali, 53, said "time to go" and returned to his driver's seat after the attack which involved getting into the rear of the van and kissing the girl's neck and lips, removing her top and assaulting her.

He was found guilty by a jury in July of sexual intercourse with a person aged between 14 and 16 and three counts of indecent assault with a person aged under 16, all committed on the same morning in 2017.

In the NSW District Court on Monday, Judge Antony Townsden jailed Ali for four years and six months with a non-parole period of two years and eight months, saying he "abused his position as a bus driver transporting vulnerable children to school".

"The victim was under the offender's supervision," the judge said, noting she moved her legs to make Ali "stop".

"I am satisfied that the offender's good character assisted him in the commission of the offence."

Citing the girl's victim impact statement, Judge Townsden said she "eloquently describes being left with trauma, nightmares and fear".

"She left school because of the painful memories. She says she is unable to complete her HSC because of this," he said.

He said her statement highlights "the effect such offences have on children" including emotional harm.

Full-time imprisonment was the only sentence that could be imposed "given the gravity of the offending behaviour", the judge said.

Ali's sentence was backdated and he will be eligible for parole in December 2020.
