Bondi surfer escapes 'jumping' shark

A Sydney surfer has had a close encounter with a shark after it "jumped" onto his board at Bondi Beach.

"Something rushed by me and jumped onto my board," said Dean Norburn.

The seasoned surfer was catching waves with a mate in choppy conditions just after 7am on Tuesday at the iconic beach.

"I've looked down. Originally I thought it was a seal but it wasn't. It was a shark," he told radio 2GB.

"Obviously I screamed a little bit. The shark jumped off my board, swam off in the other direction and swam under my mate."

No one was injured.

Bondi Rescue Lifeguards reported it was a "small" six-foot (two-metre) shark.

Lifeguards didn't see the shark but cleared the waters as a precaution, a Waverley Council spokeswoman told AAP.

The beach remains open.

"Will be a very memorable surf for both guys," the lifeguards wrote on their Facebook page.
