A driver who stopped their car to extinguish what they thought was a log on fire was shocked to discover the burning remains of a human body on the side of a road in northern NSW.

The local was driving on Pollards Rd, Dulguigan, near Tweed Heads, about 7am when they came across the remains.

Police arrived at the scene about 30 minutes later and found the distressed motorist who had made the disturbing find.

Tweed/Byron Local Area Command Detective Inspector Brendon Cullen said the body had not been identified but police believed the remains belonged to a woman.

"It is a horrible thing for anyone to come across, (the motorist) has assisted us greatly, which I am very appreciative of," he said.

"If anyone saw anything in early hours of the this morning, in that area, we urge them to come forward."

A crime scene has been established and police are searching the surrounding area as part of their investigation.
