Bayeh tore up suspected 'drug code':police

Former Kings Cross kingpin Bill Bayeh tore up a handwritten note of "numbers similar to a drug code" before he was arrested in Sydney's Potts Point last year, court documents reveal.

Bayeh was approached by police on the evening of February 12, 2015, as he sat outside the Five Boroughs Cafe on Darlinghurst Road.

The 57-year-old was asked to step out onto the side of the road and empty his pockets during a search.

"Police have commenced to view those items and noticed a handwritten piece of paper with the words '1 litre to 3 litres' and a series of numbers similar to a drug code," according to a police fact sheet tendered in court.

The fact sheet stated Bayeh had a long history of commercial drug supply and served an "extensive period" in custody.

Officers asked Bayeh to explain the note.

"The accused at this point has immediately grabbed hold of the piece of paper and commenced to tear it while putting it behind his back," the fact sheet stated.

Bayeh was arrested and taken to Kings Cross Police Station, where he declined to participate in a recorded interview, and was later charged.

He pleaded guilty on Tuesday at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court to one count of hindering police.

Police dropped a second charge of resisting police, with Bayeh set to face sentencing next week.

According to the fact sheet, investigating officers believe Bayeh should be subject to strict conditions around entering Kings Cross.

Bayeh had recently purchased a Kings Cross business named Love Machine, with police arguing he should only be allowed to enter the area when travelling to or from the establishment.

At an earlier court appearance, Bayeh told reporters police were "just trying to get me off the street".

But outside court on Tuesday, Bayeh offered no comment.

"The matter's still before the courts - we'll wait until the matter's completed before we issue a statement," defence lawyer John Hajje said.
