A Greens MP has called for greyhound racing to be banned in NSW.

Greyhound racing is inherently cruel and the sport must be banned in NSW, a Greens MP says.

John Kaye will introduce a bill on Tuesday to shut down the industry, which he says is outmoded, abusive and already in decline.

If successful, it would outlaw all greyhound racing by next year and dissolve the state's industry bodies.

"Greyhound racing has no place in a modern NSW," Dr Kaye said.

"As long as there is commercial greyhound racing there will be animal cruelty."

He also said the major political parties had exaggerated the economic dividends of the NSW industry.

Dr Kaye's bill comes after scores of Australian trainers were banned or suspended in the wake of a damning ABC Four Corners expose into live baiting.

The program showed live bait such as rabbits, possums and piglets being used as lure to train competitive dogs.

In Queensland, a specialist RSPCA and police taskforce has issued criminal charges and continues to investigate allegations of animal abuse in the industry.

Last month, it uncovered a mass grave of more than 50 greyhound carcasses near Bundaberg.

Meanwhile, Victorian investigators continue to probe allegations of live baiting at the Tooradin Trial track.
