Baird regains ground in NSW: poll

NSW Premier Mike Baird seems to have regained some approval after a topsy-turvy few months filled with backflips and key staff movements.

The coalition leads Labor 53 to 47 per cent in a Fairfax/ReachTEL poll of more than 1600 people reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday.

The result, which comes just weeks after Troy Grant stood down from the Nationals leadership and deputy premiership, comes as an improvement for the state government following a 50-50 per cent result in the same poll in August.

Mr Baird also regained the title of preferred premier, taking 50.6 per cent of the vote compared to Luke Foley's 49.4 per cent.

In August, Mr Foley led Mr Baird 51.3 per cent to 48.7 per cent.

The premier admitted the government had "got it wrong" as he backtracked on a controversial decision to ban the greyhound racing industry in NSW in October.

Almost half (49.3 per cent) of those polled supported the reversal of the ban, while 32 per cent opposed, according to the reports.

Mr Grant stood down from his key roles after the Nationals suffered a significant swing at the Orange by-election, which resulted in the party's former safe seat falling to the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party.
