A six-year-old Sydney boy had a painful start to the school year when he sat on a pencil and had to be taken to a hospital.

The student from Fairvale Public school in Fairfield was treated for an injury to his buttocks just before 10am on Wednesday.

He remains at Westmead's Children's Hospital in a stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The boy was one of more than a million NSW state and independent school students who returned to their classrooms on Wednesday for the first day in 2015.

As wet weather dampened much of NSW, it was a sign the summer holidays had clearly come to an end.
