Attempted murder charge after NSW stabbing

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a stabbing in Coonabarabran in NSW's Central West.

Police say a 37-year-old man was walking along Castlereagh Street at about 12.30am on Wednesday when he was attacked from behind by a number of people and sustained multiple stab wounds.

The alleged assailants left the scene and the injured man ran into nearby Charles Street.

Witnesses heard the man calling for help, placed him in a car, and took him to Coonabarabran Hospital.

He was later transferred to Dubbo Base Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is now in a serious but stable condition.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 21-year-old man in Coonabarabran at 4.10pm on Friday and charged him with attempted murder.

He was refused bail to appear in Dubbo Local Court on Saturday.
