Sydneysiders who may have seen or spoken to a man shot dead at a police station are being urged to come forward.

David Petersen, 45, was killed by a single, fatal shot after he allegedly threatened officers inside Quakers Hill police station on Tuesday morning, armed with a kitchen knife.

The New Zealand father was formally identified on Wednesday as detectives tried to piece together his movements in the days leading up to the fatal confrontation.

Mr Petersen lived near the police station and had at least two daughters.

Family members and friends described him as a "placid peaceful giant".

"I am so going to miss you David so so much. I'm lost for words my dearest friend and brother in life. You were always my hero," his brother Alex wrote on Facebook.
