A teenage girl and her mother have been identified as the victims of a fatal crash between an ambulance and a small car on the mid-north coast of NSW.

Police say the pair's Nissan Pulsar collided with an ambulance carrying two paramedics, a doctor and a nurse on the Pacific Highway near Valla on Friday about 5pm.

The driver, a 17-year-old girl, and her 50-year-old mother from Valla died at the scene.

The medical team onboard the ambulance tried to save their lives, NSW Ambulance said in a statement on Friday evening.

One paramedic remains in a stable condition in hospital on Saturday.

"NSW Ambulance extends its sincere sympathies to the loved ones of those killed in the crash and is providing support to the staff involved," a spokesperson said in a statement.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
