Alleged Amazon thief in Sydney court

An Australian IT worker accused of stealing $600,000 of computer equipment from global giant Amazon needs further time to decide if the charge is appropriate, a court has been told.

Christopher Hawker allegedly ordered 31 Snowball hard drives from Amazon Web Services and failed to return them as agreed.

Snowballs are designed to allow customers to physically ship large amounts of data across the world to the United States-based company to be stored on Amazon servers.

Police say after an FBI tip-off they found the devices partially dismantled in Hawker's Bronte home in July and charged him with larceny.

He appeared in Waverley Local Court on Wednesday where his lawyer, Adam Murphy, asked for an adjournment.

"We consider the charge may not be (appropriate) and need further time to determine whether ... that is the case," Mr Murphy said.

The tech whiz, who holds an ABN for a computer networking business, is expected to enter a plea at the next hearing on August 28. His bail was continued.
