Sydney rioter Ahmed Elomar, whose brother died fighting for Islamic State, has been freed from Goulburn prison.

The NSW government tried in vain to block his release, claiming the Parole Authority made errors including that it did not believe the 33-year-old held radical beliefs.

But Elomar walked away from the prison on Thursday afternoon after a NSW Supreme Court judge upheld the parole decision.

Dressed in a sweater and tracksuit pants, Elomar clutched a book and a plastic bag of personal effects as he wandered around for about 10 minutes waiting for a lift.

He did not answer any questions from waiting reporters, and eventually got picked up in a car about a block away from the prison.
