Aged home attack suspect to be assessed

A 72-year-old man accused of attacking another elderly man with a knife at a Sydney aged care home will undergo a mental health assessment, a court has heard.

Christos Tsekas appeared frail and pale in the dock at Central Local Court on Tuesday and did not apply for bail.

Members of his family cried quietly and waved at him.

Police allege Tsekas entered a room at Uniting Bruce Sharpe Lodge in Sydney's south on Sunday evening armed with a knife and attacked 72-year-old Paul Raymond Jay.

Mr Jay was left with cuts to his neck, arms and hands and was taken to St George Hospital in a serious condition, police said.

Tsekas was charged with wounding or causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

His lawyer requested Tsekas be able to keep taking his medication for an ongoing condition while in custody and that his mental health be assessed before his next court appearance on November 22.
