A young woman has been remanded in custody, charged over the death of her 20-month-old daughter in NSW's Hunter Region more than seven weeks ago.

Jessica Maree Greatorex, 22, faced Newcastle Local Court on Saturday charged with the manslaughter of the toddler, who was flown to John Hunter Hospital in cardiac arrest on the evening of June 19.

The little girl could not be revived.

Her mother was arrested at their Tarro home, near Maitland, on Friday.

Greatorex was refused bail in court and entered no plea. She is due back in the same court on August 13.

Timothy Andrew Whiteley was charged with the girl's murder on August 2 and remains in custody.

The 26-year-old was arrested that day at a home in Tanilba Bay.

Detectives from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad and Port Stephens police established Strike Force Nerium in June to investigate the circumstances surrounding the girl's death.
