A NSW woman is behind bars, charged with murdering a toddler whose fatal injuries were initially blamed on a run-in with family pets.

Police were called to a home at Oberon in the state's central tablelands last month, where they found the three-year-old unconscious and not breathing.

The boy died in hospital three days later.

Police were told the child was injured after being knocked over by his family's pet dogs at an oval.

A 40-year-old woman was charged with his murder on Monday.

She appeared in Blayney Local Court on Tuesday but did not apply for bail, which was formally refused.

She is due to appear in a Bathurst court next month.
