ACCC cracks down on dodgy oregano

Australian supermarkets and suppliers have been sprung selling "100 per cent" oregano products padded out with substantial amounts of olive leaves.

The consumer watchdog found both Aldi and Menora - who stock products at Coles, Woolworths and IGA - had falsely claimed their products contained only oregano.

"Suppliers of food products have an obligation to ensure ingredients of their products are accurately labelled and should be able to substantiate any representations made on the packaging that they approve," Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims said.

Both Aldi and Menora have promised to regularly test the contents of products labelled as oregano, along with other herbs and spices.

A number of suppliers have also agreed to stop offering oregano products containing anything other than oregano leaves, the ACCC said.
