ACCC corrects oregano crackdown claims

The consumer watchdog has wrongly named and shamed two of Australia's biggest supermarket chains for selling dodgy oregano products.

Woolworths and Coles were among a list of supermarkets and suppliers outed for selling "100 per cent" oregano products padded out with substantial amounts of olive leaves.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found both Aldi and Menora - who stock products at IGA - had falsely claimed their products contained only oregano.

"Suppliers of food products have an obligation to ensure ingredients of their products are accurately labelled and should be able to substantiate any representations made on the packaging that they approve," ACCC chairman Rod Sims said on Wednesday.

In the same statement the ACCC said the products were also stocked at Coles and Woolworths, but it corrected the claim on Thursday.

"The ACCC corrected this media release as the Menora brand of oregano was not available at Coles and Woolworths," the watchdog said on Thursday.

Both Aldi and Menora have promised to regularly test the contents of products labelled as oregano, along with other herbs and spices.
