8yo boy earns award for life-saving call

Bailey Wrigley's emotional parents swelled with pride as they recounted the life-saving emergency call the then eight-year-old made to save his mum's life.

Bailey calmly dialled 000 as Andrea Marriette lay unconscious and critically ill at their inner-west Sydney home in May.

"I'm so very, very proud of my little boy and of course my husband is too. He was just amazing and I can't believe he did it," Ms Marriette told reporters.

Bailey said his dad had shown him what to do in an emergency.

"I said [to the operator] that `I need an ambulance urgently, my mum is asleep but not really asleep'," Bailey said.

"It took a little while to get the bed in because we had steps in the back yard and the front yard and then they took mum into the ambulance and I sat in the front seat."

Ms Marriette said she couldn't believe a sinus infection could grow into a problem which required brain surgery.

Two months on, Bailey, now nine, was presented with an Ambulance NSW award in front of an assembly at Five Dock Public School on Friday.

"He's sort of a bit coy about it, I think he's a little embarrassed, but he shouldn't be because he's done a phenomenal thing and I think he realises today how massive it is," his father Damian Wrigley said.

"We're overwhelmed with what he did - it's a bit emotional today, we're really overwhelmed."

Natalie Booth, one of the paramedics who arrived to treat Ms Marriette after Bailey's call, said he dealt with the situation brilliantly.

"We respond to emergency calls all the time and half the adults we go to can't handle the situation as well as that. He was very calm and knew exactly what to do," Ms Booth said.
