An elderly Sydney man who became obsessed with ousting his strata manager before gunning him down at a tenants' meeting will be detained indefinitely.

Sydney District Court Judge Andrew Haesler on Thursday found that Ilie Istudor, now 87, was trying to kill his building manager Stephen Smith when he shot him in the neck in April 2014.

But after hearing evidence from psychiatric experts, Judge Haesler accepted the octogenarian was suffering from paranoid psychosis at the time of the shooting, and found him not guilty of attempted murder by reason of mental illness.

Judge Haesler on Thursday ordered that Istudor be detained until he is deemed fit for release by the Mental Health Review Tribunal.
