A fishing trawler has caused a 400-metre diesel slick on the NSW north coast.

The spill is in the waterways near the mouth of the Hastings River at Port Macquarie.

Fire Rescue NSW, which has a hazardous materials unit in Port Macquarie, has deployed a specialised vehicle to mop up the spill.

Superintendent Josh Turner says the spill has been contained and poses no immediate environmental risk.

"Diesel gives very little risk of fire, and we have removed all ignition sources," he said.

Further investigations will follow to determine the cause of the leak.
