NSW pubs, clubs, bars granted extended trading for select Olympic events

NSW venues streaming selected events live from Paris 2024 will be allowed to stay open later than usual as the state enforces "special event extended trading hours".

Licensed hotels, bars, clubs, small bars and live music venues will be allowed to trade through until the early hours of the morning if they are playing any Matildas game or the swimming finals.

Venues streaming the rugby sevens final and the opening ceremony will also be allowed to participate in the extended trading hours.

The opening ceremony will mean venues can stay open until 8am, with all other events slated to take place between 2am and 7am.

Minister for the night-time economy John Graham said all pubs, clubs and bars across the state were eligible for the extended hours, given they play the selected matches.

"Olympic fever only strikes once every four years and as Australians, we know this means late nights and some sleep deprivation to enjoy it properly," Graham said.

"There is nothing like cheering home a gold medal winner among friends and community and special event extended trading will provide the options people need to do just that – as well as an economic boost and more jobs at night."

As part of the Olympic celebrations, the Matildas games against Zambia and the USA will be played live and free at the Sydney Opera House Playhouse.

Darling Harbour's free live site will also stream the Games from 12pm to 11pm daily.

The Opera House sails will also be lit up with green and gold on August 1.

The extended trading hours will run from tomorrow until August 29.
