New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has made a controversial call about who will win the NRL grand final.

Speaking to 2GB's Ben Fordham, Minns said he thought the final between the Penrith and Brisbane would be a close game but refused to back the Panthers.

Fordham was outraged that Minns wasn't supporting the team from his own state.

"Oh well, I thought you were going to be around for some time," Fordham said.

"You're supposed to get around the Sydney side, don't you have advisers who tell you this is important?"

Minns responded that he enjoyed the evolution of the Broncos this season.

"I'm really attracted to this Brisbane story," he said.

"I think from going cellar dwellers to nearly taking the column."

But Fordham doubled down on his outrage.

"You've just backed Brisbane to win the NRL grand final," he said.

"How many voters do we have in the Penrith area?

"Because you won't be getting any of them in the next election."

Minns said it didn't matter as his team - the Bulldogs - wasn't in the game anyway.

The premier also backed Storm coach Craig Bellamy to be the next Blues coach after Brad Fittler's resignation.

You can watch the NRL grand final live and free on Channel 9 and 9Now on Sunday from 7.30pm AEDT.
