Police crackdown on organised criminals after Bondi Junction gangland execution

NSW Police have cracked down on organised criminal groups after high-level Comanchero bikie gang member Alen Moradian was executed in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

Three people have been charged and 12 firearm and weapon prohibition compliance checks were carried out in the past week after Moradian's murder last Tuesday.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis said the Raptor Squad, responsible for targeting organised criminal syndicates, has been particularly focused on cracking down on gang members since the murder.

"It comes off the back of the murder of Mr Moradian at Bondi Junction last week," he said.

"It is part of business of usual for Raptor but it may have been a more focused and targeted approach over the last week considering what happened in relation to Moradian.

"Some of those we have targeted were definitely associates of Moradian."

Moradian was shot dead at close range while he sat in the driver's seat of his car at the Whitten Lane apartment complex's underground car park last week.

It's believed the Bondi Junction apartment was meant to be his safe house.

Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty described Moradian as a "high-level criminal identity" who "had a big target on his back" last week.

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting.

Moradian's funeral was held on Wednesday with a heavy police presence attached which Koutsoufis today said was to "keep the peace".

Koutsoufis said police use firearm prohibition orders (FPOs) to target "violent criminals who should not be in possession of firearms or weapons".

He added regular compliance checks on FPOs mean shooting numbers are down in the state.

"We are doing all we can to keep the community safe," he said.

"It also means trying to keep these guys alive that are intent on doing harm to each other."
