Police officer charged with assault over arrest of Hannah Thomas at anti-Israel protest

A police officer has been charged with the assault of former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas at an anti-Israel protest in Sydney's west earlier this year.

Today, a 33-year-old senior constable was issued a court attendance notice for assault causing bodily harm.

The officer's employment status is currently under review as investigations continue.

On June 27, police officers attempted to move protesters out of the front of a business on Lakemba Street in Belmore.

The rally occurred outside an Australian firm reportedly connected to the manufacture of components for US fighter jets used by the Israeli Defence Forces.

As police tried to move the protesters, 35-year-old Hannah Thomas suffered facial injuries and was hospitalised for treatment.

She has since undergone multiple surgeries and said she has been warned by doctors that she may never regain vision in her right eye.

Thomas was charged following the alleged unauthorised protest and was charged with hindering or resisting police and two counts of refusing to comply with a move-on direction.

All charges against Thomas were dropped earlier this month.

Four other protestors were also faced court in June after being arrested on charges relating to the protests.

The officer is set to appear before Bankstown Local Court on November 18.
