NSW cop one of two men charged over a break-and-enter in north-western NSW

A NSW Police officer is set to face court today over allegations he and another man broke into a rural home, tied up the elderly resident inside and threatened him.

Police and paramedics were called to the home in Lightning Ridge in north-western NSW at 7.30pm on October 3 over reports two men had forced entry to the property and stolen $100,000 in cash.

Inside, they found a 78-year-old man who had leg and arm injuries.

He was treated by paramedics and taken to Lightning Ridge Hospital in a stable condition.

He has since been released.

After an extensive investigation, detectives and specialist police raided two homes in the Lake Illawarra area yesterday, seizing a number of items.

The same day, police caught up with the two suspects - a 36-year-old off-duty senior constable and a 51-year-old man - at a vehicle stop at Shell Cove.

Both men were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where they were charged with aggravated break and enter and committing a serious indictable offence.

They were both refused bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court today.

The police officer's employment status is now under review.
