NSW mother denies toddler's murder

A mother has pleaded not guilty to murdering her two-year-old son in NSW's Illawarra region.

The mother, who cannot be identified, is charged with inflicting fatal injuries on the toddler some time between July 30 and August 3, 2012, in the Wollongong area.

She pleaded not guilty in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday.

Crown prosecutor Terry Thorpe said the crown case was circumstantial.

"There were a number of significant injuries inflicted on the deceased over a period of time," Mr Thorpe said.

The child's death sparked outcry over resources in the Family and Community Services Department after it emerged the toddler had come to the attention of authorities.

The woman will face a six to eight week trial from February 2, 2015.
