Why the number of mobile speed cameras in NSW is about to increase
The number of speed cameras on New South Wales roads is about to increase.
Heavily-signed vehicles are back after being updated to meet new laws that require mobile camera operators to place warning signs before and after cars that carry mobile speed cameras.
Transport for NSW had to retrofit its entire fleet to ensure new top-mounted signs could be installed.

From January 1 the mobile camera operators have to put signs before and after the car meaning last month just 38 of the 143 vehicles were operating.
This month another 60 will be rolled out.
The catalyst for bringing back the warning signs was a parliamentary inquiry which found the "unmarked" cars did nothing to reduce the road toll.
Data from Revenue NSW revealed the changes to the law have already seen a big drop in fines.

Last December, 8,000 drivers were caught by mobile speed cameras compared to 66,000 in December 2021.
"Let's hope we see fines continuing to fall and we see the road toll fall at the same time, ultimately, that's what everyone wants," NRMA's Peter Khoury said.
The full fleet is expected to be operating by April.
