Police are investigating after a Newcastle man suffered neck injuries in an apparent tomahawk attack about 11.30am.

Detectives believe the incident may have been targeted and not just a random act of violence the Newcastle Herald has reported.

The man, aged in his 30s, received a 12cm laceration to his neck in the attack on Upfold Street, Mayfield, in Newcastle’s north-west.

Nearby residents provided first aid until paramedics arrived.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition, a NSW Ambulance Service spokeswoman advised.

Police investigations are ongoing and NSW Police is expected to release a statement this afternoon.
