NSW Labor 'declares war' on toll admin fees ahead of state election

NSW Labor has declared "war" on the administration fees charged on top of tolls as part of the party's state election promises.

The state's Labor leader Chris Minns announced the party wants to crack down on the "sneaky administration fees" charged on top of tolls for drivers without an automated tag or pass.

"We are going to declare war on the admin toll notices that families in NSW receive," he said.

"The extra admin costs associated with simply not filling in a form right or not having a consolidated notice means that hundreds of millions of dollars are being gouged out of the pockets of western Sydney families."

The admin fees are a toll charge for drivers on top of what they're already paying.

Labor claims this can cost between $1.10 per toll to $20 for drivers with a toll account and $10 for the first notice and $20 for a second notice for someone without an account.

The party also said these notices arrive to a driver in separate letters.

So the party has pledged to consolidate the toll road notices so instead of five or six letters revealing various charges it will just be just one.

"Just by consolidating the notices so you only get one in the mail rather than five or six letters indicating you owe $10 each," Minns said.

Shadow minister for roads John Graham said it is the last thing a family under financial pressure needs to receive a plethora of toll notices.

"It can often be the last straw," he said.

It comes as the party has also planned to introduce a toll cap at $60 a week to provide relief to drivers.

The toll cap, which will be on top of the existing toll rebate and M5 cashback schemes, is aimed at providing "immediate relief" to help ease the burden of heavy tolling on motorists in Western Sydney.

The scheme would be in place for two years and will commence on January 1, 2024.

"An elected Labor Government would cap tolls at $60 per week and cut these tolling administration fees as Allan Fels begins the work of real long-term toll reform," Graham said.
