NSW Labor looks to ban insta-booze

Tang-style powdered alcohol would be banned in NSW under laws proposed by the opposition.

NSW Labor health spokesman Walt Secord's Liquor Amendment (Powdered Alcohol) Bill 2015 imposes $11,000 fines and maximum 12-month jail terms for the sale and supply of powdered alcohol.

Mr Secord says an American manufacturer of these powders - which are mixed with water to create alcoholic drinks - has flagged a possible move into the Australian market.

"There are already many different ways to obtain alcohol, but there are many health risks associated with powdered alcohol including the ability to snort the substance or create hyper-alcohol drinks," Mr Secord said.
