Top politicians were tested with a Year 7 maths question. It didn't end well for one of them

This was the challenge put to NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell and her opposition counterpart Prue Car on 2GB this morning.

After a pre-election debate between the two, host Ben Fordham presented them with a question from the Numeracy section of the Year 7 NAPLAN test.
The question had to be solved without a calculator, and tapped into the cost-of-living concerns top of mind for many voters.
"Pears cost $4 per kilogram. Ben buys 4.15 kilograms of pears. How much does Ben pay for the pears," the question read.
The two were given about a minute to solve the question.
Car finished first, but got the answer wrong.
Mitchell got the question correct.

"Can I just say, English was my strong point," Car said after being told her answer was wrong.
"So was mine, Prue," Mitchell replied.
Outside of the exam, a kilogram of William Bartlett pears will set you back $3.90 at Coles but are on special at Woolworths for $3.50.
