Some face mask rules likely to be extended in NSW

Face masks could remain mandatory in certain settings in New South Wales, even after the state reaches a target of 95 per cent fully vaccinated.

The NSW Government's COVID-19 committee will meet today and future rules about mask are expected to be top of the agenda.

It is predicted NSW will reach 95 per cent fully vaccinated around December 15.

Mask mandates had been expected to be dropped when the milestone was reached.

However, 9News understands masks will still be required when catching public transport, under the new rules to be implemented in a few weeks' time.

Hospital workers and those in the aged and healthcare sectors will also still need to wear masks.

It is looking likely masks will no longer be compulsory in school settings, however they will be strongly recommended for shopping centres, restaurants or pubs.

Meanwhile, unvaccinated senior high school students had some good news this morning.

The students have now been granted an exemption to attend their formals, providing they return a negative PCR test within 72 hours.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said senior students had done it very tough this year and they deserved to be able to party.
