Thousands protest climate change amid fire crisis

Thousands of people have swarmed Town Hall and Hyde Park in Sydney's CBD as part of a snap protest on climate change.

Protesters holding placards and marching through the city this afternoon were joined by activists from the extinction rebellion movement in what they have labelled a 'climate emergency protest'.

The rally comes after consecutive days of smoke haze cloaked Sydney's CBD, a remnant of the more than 80 bushfires still burning around the state.

Parts of Druitt Street, Park Street and Elizabeth Street were closed due to the march causing heavy traffic around the city's CBD.

Crowds arrived at Town Hall with a list of demands for the government, including a refusal of any new coal mines and 100 per cent renewable energy by the year 2030.

Councillor Jess Miller spoke at the rally and addressed the government saying, "If you can't do your job, then get out of the way".

The protests remained peaceful despite strong police presence.    

Tonight's protests mark exactly two months since Extinction Rebellion protesters caused chaos around Australia major cities in October.
