Notorious Perth driver back behind bars with fresh convictions

One of WA’s worst drink drivers is back behind bars - after pleading guilty to a string of fresh traffic charges.

Mitchell Walsh, 35, was arrested yesterday after police seized a stolen car from a roadside in Dianella in Perth.

The notorious criminal was not long out of jail after serving a 12-month sentence for riding a stolen motorbike.

Walsh has a shocking record behind the wheel.

He first hit the headlines in 2003, when he avoided jail for hitting and killing 10-year-old cyclist Jess Meehan - while three times above the legal alcohol limit.

Since then, he’s been in and out of court for repeated traffic offences - with eight convictions for driving under the influence and nine for driving while banned.

Walsh today pleaded guilty to four of seven unlicensed driving charges and two counts of stealing fuel - but wants to see photos of his three alleged speeding offences.

His lawyer applied for bail, so he could “explain to his daughter why he may not be available the following year”.

But the magistrate, who jailed him for his last crime spree, was quick to reject the request.

Walsh will face court again in two weeks.
