North Stradbroke fire to burn for days

A blaze on North Stradbroke Island will burn for a few more days, with crews still working to extinguish spot fires in difficult terrain.

Cooler conditions have helped ease the fire threat, but crews are having difficulty putting out fires they can't access from the ground.

Water-bombing aircraft will again be deployed on Thursday morning, while fire crews will keep strengthening containment lines.

Rain and water bombing on Wednesday helped firefighters get the upper hand.

"That left some small pockets of fire still burning in fairly difficult to reach terrain," incident controller David Sutch said.

A task force is being sent to the southern end of the island to get a handle on spot fires burning in remote, inhabited terrain.

The fire isn't threatening any properties, but it is causing a large smoke haze that is drifting towards islands in Moreton Bay, the Department of Community Safety says.

Access to some roads and camping grounds on North Stradbroke Island is still restricted.

The fire has burnt more than half the island.

No homes have been affected so far, but the fire prompted the evacuation of about 900 campers on New Year's Day.

Some residents were also forced to flee when the fire came close to homes in Myora on Saturday night.
