An incident on a Malaysia Airlines plane is not being treated as terrorism, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has told parliament.

A 25-year-old Sri Lankan national will face a Melbourne court on Thursday after an incident on Malaysia Airlines flight MH128 which was heading to Kuala Lumpur when it was forced to turn back to Melbourne.

"I can confirm that the matter is not currently being treated as terrorism-related," Mr Turnbull said on Thursday, adding the man had a criminal past and had been treated for mental health issues.
