‘No’ skywriting appears above Melbourne

Skywriting spelling out “No” has appeared above Melbourne this afternoon, weeks before the same-sex marriage survey closes.

Video taken by 9NEWS showed the letters being spelt out in the sky just after 1pm.

It is unknown who has commissioned the message, which is purportedly in protest of the “Yes” vote.

Many people, including Greens leader Richard Di Natale, have criticised the writing on social media.

“This is not what Melbourne is about. We will #ChooseLove and #VoteYes. Love is love,” Mr Di Natale posted to Twitter.

Some flipped the message in favour of same-sex marriage.

“Maybe it's ON? That must be it,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Thanks to whoever got a skywriter to write "Oz" over Melbourne today, appreciate it,” another user said.

It comes just weeks after a similar incident in Sydney, where a skywriter spelled out “Vote No”.

Ballots for the same-sex marriage survey started to be mailed out on September 11 and must be returned by November 7.

Almost two-thirds, or 10 million, Australians have returned their surveys, The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) confirmed today.

Results of the survey are expected to be released on November 15.
