No further cases of Legionnaires' disease reported after Sydney outbreak

Western Sydney residents can breathe a little easier following news no new cases of Legionnaires' disease have been detected from an outbreak at Burwood.

NSW Health has tested buildings in the Burwood, Concord West and Rhodes areas but so far those investigated have proved negative.

Testing will continue with checks of cooling towers in neighbouring areas, including areas surrounding Strathfield on the border with Burwood.

An elderly man died at Concord Hospital earlier in May as a result of the Burwood outbreak, and was one of numerous cases to occur in Sydney this year.

"It is often very difficult to pinpoint the source of an outbreak. The main aim of a public health response is to stop (it)," acting chief NSW health officer Dr Jeremy McAnulty said in a statement on Wednesday.

A Legionella expert panel has been created to determine whether any new measures are needed to improve protection and control of the disease.
