No budget details on parental leave

Budding parents will have to wait for the details of Tony Abbott's paid parental leave scheme.

The coalition's first budget allocated $1.9 billion in 2014/15 for the existing Labor-designed scheme, but did not provide details on the cost of its replacement.

A statement from the Department of Social Services said it was working to continue delivery of the current paid parental leave scheme during the design and roll-out of the new scheme.

The Abbott scheme has been slated to start from July 2015.

It is expected to give eligible working parents of children born or adopted on or after July 1 2015 access to 26 weeks of parental leave pay at a rate based on their wage, capped at $100,000 a year, or the national minimum wage, whichever is greater.

It will also provide superannuation contributions.

The scheme is set to be funded through a levy on the biggest companies.
