Turkey coup has failed: Turnbull

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says Australia continues to support the democratically elected government in Turkey in the wake of a failed coup.

He said he and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop are keeping constant contact with Australia's ambassador in Ankara, James Larsen.

"At this stage, it appears the coup has failed," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

"We call on parties to respect (the democratic institutions) and we call on all parties to show calm and restraint in this difficult period in Turkey."

Ms Bishop said while it was too early to know the motivations for the coup, it appeared it only came from parts of the military.

"It doesn't appear to be a coup backed by Turkey's secular political, military and civilian opposition, so it's a small element within the military," she told ABC TV.

However, any challenge to a democratically elected government from elements within the military was deeply concerning.

Ms Bishop said she hoped there would be minimal disruption to the government of Turkey, which is a key ally in the fight against Islamic State extremists.

The government is urging anyone in the country trying to leave to contact their travel agent and airline, and has consular officials at Turkish airports to help.

Travel advice for Turkey generally is to exercise a high degree of caution and to reconsider travelling to the capital Ankara or to Istanbul.

No Australians are believed to have been killed or injured in the violence. However, people in Australia concerned about friends of family in Turkey should first try to contact them directly.
