No Aust victim in Mali terror attacks

No Australians are believed to have been caught up in a shooting rampage at a hotel in the Malian capital of Bamako.

The Australian High Commission in Accra has been making urgent inquiries to see if any Australians were affected by the overnight attack, which left at least 27 people dead.

"At this stage we have no information suggesting any Australians have been involved," a spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told AAP on Saturday.

Government frontbencher Scott Ryan labelled the deadly attacks, which have been claimed by a group linked to al-Qaeda, as tragic.

"The tragedy of what happened in Paris last week has sadly been replicated in Mali," he told Sky News on Saturday.

Federal Labor leader Bill Shorten and deputy Tanya Plibersek deplored the "vicious, indiscriminate" attack, saying Australia stands strong with those affected.

"Together with the international community we will fight against terror wherever it occurs. Our determination is only strengthened by these kind of tragic events," they said in a statement on Saturday.
