Nine's talk radio dominates ratings as Aussies turn to news

Nine's talk radio stations are on a tear as Australians returning to work tune in for the latest news and current affairs.

3AW in Melbourne and 2GB in Sydney were both named the number one radio stations in their respective cities after recording their best GfK Survey 1 results in more than a decade.

2GB 873 won the categories of breakfast, mornings, evenings and weekends, boasting a 14.4 per cent audience share and winning the station its best Survey 1 result in a decade.

Retaining the breakfast crown was Ben Fordham Live, which scooped an audience share of 18.1 per cent and recording its best-ever result.

In Melbourne, 3AW was named number one across breakfast, mornings, drive, evenings and weekends, boasting a total audience share of 16.3 per cent.

Breakfast with Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft posted a staggering 23.1 per cent audience share, retaining the breakfast show crown and broadcasting to nearly a quarter of all radio listeners at that time in Melbourne.

Nationally, Nine's talk radio shows in 3AW, 2GB, 4BC and 6PR recorded a 6.4 per cent year-on-year growth and retained the number one crown in the 40-plus demographic with a 28.1 per cent audience share.

Greg Byrnes, Nine Radio's Head of Content, said the results were stunning.

"This survey proves that 3AW and 2GB are the 'must listen' radio stations in their cities. We are way out in front as #1 and the audiences are getting even bigger," Mr Byrnes said.

"More than 100,000 new listeners are turning in each week when compared to a year ago."

Mr Byrnes said audiences are turning to talk radio in greater numbers than they have for years.

"Ben Fordham in Sydney and Ross and Russ in Melbourne have again recorded stunning results while in Perth, Gareth Parker has grown the 6PR Breakfast audience by 26 per cent year-on-year," Mr Byrnes said.

"Right across the country talk audiences are growing stronger year-on-year, with more and more people turning to us for live and local news and opinion."
