A 14-year-old boy who tried to run from police after crashing a stolen car on a southwest Sydney road has been charged with several minor offences.

Eight people were taken to hospital with minor injuries following a crash at Lurnea in the early hours of Monday morning.

Highway police had initially tried to stop the car on a suburban street at nearby Sadleir but the boy sped off and officers pursued.

Moments later, the car driven by the youth crossed onto the wrong side of the road and hit an oncoming vehicle, injuring himself, his four passengers and the four people travelling in the other car.

The boy fled but was found by officers.

He was taken to hospital with a broken ankle.

Bail with strict conditions was granted and the teenager is due before a children's court in late February.
