Nick Philippoussis unlikely to ever face sexual assault charges

Nick Philippoussis, the father of Australian tennis star Mark Philippoussis, is unlikely to ever face court over 14 child sexual assault charges filed against him last year.

Mr Philippoussis Snr was scheduled to appear in court this morning but remains bed-ridden following a stroke.

“He’s still in the hospital, bed-ridden and more or less non-responsive,” Mr Philippoussis’ lawyer Ryan Tegnelia said.

“The indications are... that he will not be improving.

“At some point we’ll have to make the decision to dismiss the case or how to move forward.”

Mr Philippoussis was arrested in his San Diego home after allegations were made against him by two girls, both under the age of 10.

Both girls had been taking private tennis lessons from Mr Philippoussis.

Mr Philippoussis has previously pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence.

“He’s obviously not competent to assist in his defence, or even participate in the proceedings,” Mr Tegnelia said.

District prosecutors said it would be inappropriate to drop the charges at this stage.

A six month stay was placed on proceedings, with Mr Philippoussis next scheduled to appear on the December 12.
