Australian tennis star and car enthusiast Nick Kyrgios has used his early departure from Wimbledon to splash out some luxurious new wheels.

Kyrgios first spotted the $180,000 Dodge Challenger Hellcat outside a hotel while overseas in Miami, and it was love at first sight.

“I was instantly attracted to it,” he told 9NEWS on the Gold Coast this afternoon.

With the help of his brother, the 22-year-old had the Hellcat modified to suit Australian standards and imported to his hometown of Canberra.

The car boasts 700-plus horsepower, but Kyrgios insisted he plans to be “careful” when driving it.

“It’s a very powerful car. It can do some great things, but at the same time you’ve got to be responsible in it. I know that I have to be very careful in it,” he said.

Kyrgios’ purchase comes as a silver lining to his early departure from Wimbledon, where he suffered a hip injury and was forced to retire in his opening round match.

“I’m doing rehab everyday, and I'm aiming for Washington (Citi Open) in a couple of weeks,” he said.

“If everything keeps going there’s no reason why I can't be playing healthy in the next few weeks.”
