Coalition extends lead over Labor in latest Newspoll

The Coalition continues to extend its lead over Labor as Malcolm Turnbull remains way ahead of Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister, the latest Newspoll shows.

The Coalition is ahead by six percentage points, scoring 53 percent to Labor's 47 percent in two-party preferred terms, the poll of 1587 people taken for The Australian newspaper shows.

The government's primary vote has climbed one point to 46 percent in the past fortnight, up seven points since the leadership change.

Labor's core support fell one point to 34 percent, a tumble of five points since Mr Turnbull ousted Tony Abbott for the prime ministership.

The Greens also fell one point to 10 percent while support for other parties and independents gained one point to 10 per cent.

Mr Turnbull's massive lead over Mr Shorten as preferred prime minister narrowed from 46 points to 43 points, with the prime minister easing two points to 61 percent while Mr Shorten rose from his record low 17 percent to 18 percent.
