Sydney’s rail commuters are being urged to take extra care boarding trains after a spike in accidents.

Many of those can be avoided if passengers take more care, warns Sydney Trains, which has 1.3 million people travelling on its network every day.

Last year there was a 34 per cent increase in passengers injuring themselves on the Sydney Trains network – and many were due to commuters rushing to catch trains.

The figure included 126 people who tripped, fell or lost control when pushing a pram, compared with 94 incidents the previous year.

The result can mean pain and injury for people suffering an accident as well as major delays for other commuters.

An increasing factor in accidents on the rail network is people using mobile devices.

CCTV footage showed one woman falling down stairs at Sydney’s Central Station while she looked at her mobile.

Rail chiefs are now urging passengers to take more care when travelling.

“People still think it’s the last train to nowhere. You know, don’t rush. You’ll fall over, you’ll injure yourself,” Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins told 9News.

“It’s better to be two minutes taking to get to your destination than spending six months in hospital or even worse.”
