Thousands caught up in vaccination bungle after Sydney inner-west surgery wrongly stores vials

Health authorities have warned patients in Sydney's inner west they may need to be vaccinated again after thousands of vials were incorrectly stored at a medical practice and given to patients, including children.

About 3000 patients who attended the Burwood practice of Darrel and Brinda Weinman have been notified after investigators found vaccines were incorrectly stored or out-of-date.

NSW Health said the vaccines included measles mumps and rubella as well as flu formulas which were not stored within national standards.

It said patients who attended the now closed Lindsay Street practice since 2010 and received a vaccination should contact their health authorities or their doctor to see whether they need the jabs again.

Sydney Local Health District's Clinical Director of Public Health, Leena Gupta told the Sydney Morning Herald the vaccines administered at this practice may be ineffective.

"However, due to inconsistent record keeping at the practice, it has been difficult to identify which patients have been vaccinated and to obtain contact details for all patients," Dr Gupta said

It is understood the married GPs had stored the medicine in a domestic fridge instead of a specialised vaccine fridge and audited regularly.

Dr Brinda Weinman has been helping authorities in the investigation - her husband died last year.
